Bakewell v Casuals 27 4 2019
By Lech Kluk
Casuals scrape a win. Game abandoned due to torrential rain.
The only memorable thing to come from the game was Casuals' 22nd win out of 22, making it an unbeaten league season. The weather played a huge part, with rain throughout, sometimes torrential, with a gale force wind blowing down the pitch.
Bakewell had the wind at their backs in the first half, and made the most of it, by applying pressure for the 1/4 of the game.
They kicked a penalty, which was the only score during Woody's 10 minute absence, having received a yellow card
Casuals then worked their way upfield through some really dogged play, keeping the ball close, eventually giving Steve Naylor the space to cross for the try.
3-5 at halftime, and so it stayed.
The players retreated to the changing rooms at halftime to get some respite from the cold and rain, 4° C at one stage. When the ref gave them the option, after 60 minutes, both sides rapidly left the pitch, most shaking from the cold
To dampen the post match celebration, they were greeted with cold showers, the prima Donnas from the county game using the hot water.
Hope everyone managed to enjoy the win.
The 7 or so spectators, 2 from Casuals, could be described as diehards, or maybe just mad.
The win was what we came to see, not spectular, but check the league table.
Well done guys, a hell of a season, great pleasure to watch.
From Spalding to Buxton, to Grantham, players have turned up and done their bit to make the season to remember.
Well done Bakewell for staying up.
It's been a hard season for you, but with advent of some new facilities, let's hope you prosper.
Time for a hot bath, a whisky or 2, and a hot curry.
See you at Lady Bay on Sunday
