Casuals win “ugly” with a 5 try haul, and the 13th try bonus point, giving Casuals a big buffer over 2nd placed Ashfield

Nottingham Casuals v Sleaford
Saturday 2nd February 2019

Casuals 29 points Sleaford 5
Casuals welcomed old rivals Sleaford to Canalside, looking to “do the double” and maintain their progress towards promotion.
It didn’t take Casuals long to get off the mark, with a try just after 2 minutes, with Niall O’Kane feeding Mark Higgins on his inside, to get him over the line.
A promising start but Casuals then managed to squander territorial advantage and possession, giving Sleaford room to take play away from their half.
Casuals put on the pressure, winning possession from a ruck midfield, the ball went to O’Kane who outstripped the defence to run in for an unconverted try.
Half time arrived with the score only 10 points to nil, but the start of the second half started with a score in the opening minute.
Centre James Wood managed to split the defence, and Brodie Howatson went round the outside to touch down, with a Higgins conversion to boost the scoreline to 17 points.
Unfortunately Casuals became a little bit loose, and Sleaford capitalised to get a try in the corner.
Undeterred , Casuals continued to dominate, but still could not find their way to the line.
Kieran Maisonnet came closest, but once again his effort, as in several previous games, found him coming up just short of the try line.
Finally after another 20 minutes, Casuals being awarded a penalty, the tried and trusted kick to touch, a drive from the lineout, and Graeme Roberts added to his growing tally of tries from the back of the maul.
Higgins converted, and Casuals had their try bonus point.
The scoring was rounded off when Liam Tighe made a break through the centre, and Wood was the beneficiary of the space created, going over for the 5th and final try.
A great result, not the feast of flowing rugby that the gathering of past players who had turned might have hoped for, but nevertheless it did not dampen their enjoyment.
No doubt the international in the early evening, followed by the comedy night, made it a day to remember. Casuals welcomed back Pete Wilcox, back for brief visit from his new home in Canada.

Casuals now look forward to a trip to Spalding on the 16th, hoping to continue their wonderful season.
