Midlands 2 East North
Bakewell 22 Nottingham Casuals 13
Casuals slipped to another defeat this time away at Bakewell.
Despite taking an early lead with a Mark Higgins penalty, Bakewell came
back into the game taking a 15 – 8 lead into half time with a penalty
and 2 tries, 1 converted.
Brodie Howatson scored his first try after Higgins broke from behind a
scrum, and Howatson just stretched over. That closed the gap, but
Bakewell re-established the lead with a try of their own.
Howatson gave Casuals some hope with his second touchdown. Higgins
speculatively crossed kicked and Howatson gathered to score. But it
wasn’t enough, and Casuals came away losers from a game which onlookers
felt they should have won.
Although Casuals functioned better in the set pieces, it was Casuals
mistakes and poor defending which helped Bakewell.
If only a few more kicks had gone over for Casuals, they would have
gained a losing bonus point. The referee controversially disallowed a
conversion because of a split decision between the touch judges.
Overall it was, according to the spectators, a better display, with more ball in hand, there is still work to be done.
With only one win so far in the league, Casuals have to start to
improve their position, or they will have a battle to survive in this
league.
Non-availabilities, causing constant changes, are not helping to
maintain any continuity.
