Casuals fightback not quite enough

Midlands 2 East North
18th October 2014
Nottingham Casuals 12 Market Bosworth 20

Casuals showed distinct signs of improvement in the latter stages of the game, but the visitors had the upper hand for most of the first half.
There were moments when it looked as if Casuals might actually take the lead, as they made good ground, but the tendency to waste good possession thwarted them.

3 times they were able to get in Bosworth’s ½ but each time, they gave away the ball. Bosworth went upfield, on 22 minutes, and managed to force a penalty, which was converted.

Bosworth’s forceful forward play allowed them to gain ground from scrums and broken play, but Casuals were robust in their defence,

When Casuals gave away a daft penalty in front of their own posts, Bosworth opted to take the scrum.
Their No 8, who had made several telling runs, broke clean through from the base of the scrum for a simple try.

The game was delayed as several of Casuals band of Doctors took care of a Casuals player on an adjacent pitch, who had suffered a broken leg.
I'm sure everyone will want to convey Paul best wishes, and that the scalpel wielder does a brilliant job.

The delay did not stop Market Bosworth after the restart, and they went in at the corner for an unconverted try.

Casuals were undeterred and they again took the ball back upfield, but they were guilty of hanging on to the ball, instead of taking the simple option of passing, trying to force the game.

Market Bosworth turned the tables when a simple move from the back of a lineout was taken through a huge gap for a converted try.

With a deficit of 20 points, Casuals were staring at a considerable losing margin, but their determination started to pay off.

It was Casuals turn to drive on from a lineout, and the ball found its way to Steve Naylor coming off his wing to carve his way through the centre. A well timed pass found Tom Martin, making his 1st team debut, who flew into the corner for a try. Unfortunately the kick was blown off target by the strong wind, which was to prove costly.

Minutes later Casuals’ attack took them right up to Bosworths’ posts, and Mark Higgins was able to get through to dive under the posts. He added the conversion, but it was too late to get the losing bonus point that Casuals’ spirited fight-back deserved.

Next week Casuals take on another relegated side in the shape of Matlock, away at Cromford Meadows, expecting yet another tough encounter.
